His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman

I’ve recently read Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials” trilogy whilst I was in hospital & thoroughly enjoyed all three books – Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife & The Amber Spyglass.

Northern Lights concerns a girl named Lyra who leads a carefree existence on the streets of an alternate Oxford whilst her Uncle – Lord Asriel keeps an eye on her., until one day she starts noticing that her friends are all mysteriously vanishing. After a few narrow escapes herself she joins with a group of people who are also interested to find out what has happened to all the children, and they make a perilous and exciting journey to the North Pole, following a tip-off that this is where all the children have been taken. Along the way Lyra meets fearsome armoured bears, clans of witches & the sinister General Oblation Board….

In the second Novel “The Subtle Knife” Lyra finds herself in a different world after following Lord Asriel. Once there she meets a young lad named Will, who is on the run after committing a murder. They then notice that there are no adults in this world and learn about a precious artefact called The Subtle Knife which can open up doorways between worlds & is being kept in a tower nearby. So Lyra & Will decide to try and get the Subtle Knife, which is fraught with difficulty because there are loads of bad guys who are also after it aswell.

The Third novel “The Amber Spyglass” follows the adventures of Will, who is now protected by two angels , as her tries to rescue Lyra from the villainous clutches of Mrs Coulter and deliver The Subtle Knife to Lord Asriel ready for the final battle between good and evil, whilst trying to avoid the dark forces who are pursuing him eager to get their own hands on it for there own nefarious purposes.

The Severn Valley Railway recently won a special Award for Community Benefit at the 2009 Awards of the Institute of Civil Engineering, in recognition of the tremendous efforts madeto get it back up and running again after parts of the embankments along the line were washed away during severe flooding in June 2007.

Weekend with Thomas the Tank Engine

The also recently hosted their annual Weekend with Thomas the Tank Engine event. The Engine House at Highley became Imagination Station for the weekend and there was also plenty of other entertainment aswell, including a Puch & Judy Show (Where’s my swasages?) Episodes of Thomas the Tank Engine being regularly screened and a working model railway. Daisy the Diesel was also on display at Bewdley as was George the Grumpy Stem Roller. The Troublesome Trucks were also causing trouble for Thomas as usual. Ther was also a second-hand book stall & I was able to buy some great books at bargain prices.
