Chicken Story

No Comments Written by whizzbang on October 27, 2009 in Fun & Games.

Farmer John lived on a quiet rural highway.
But, as time went by, the traffic
Slowly built up at an alarming rate.
The traffic was so heavy and so fast that his
Chickens were being run over at a rate of three to six a day.

So one day Farmer John called the sheriff’s office
And said, “You’ve got to do something about all
Of these people driving so fast and killing all of my chickens.”

“What do you want me to do?” asked the sheriff.
“I don’t care, just do something about those crazy drivers!”
So the next day he had the county workers
Go out and erected a sign that said:

SLOW: SCHOOL CROSSING

Three days later Farmer John called the sheriff
And said, “You’ve got to do something about these drivers.
The ’school crossing’ sign seems to make them go even faster.”
So, again, the sheriff sends out the county
Workers and they put up a new sign:

SLOW: CHILDREN AT PLAY

That really sped them up. So Farmer John called
And called and called every day for three weeks.
Finally, he asked the sheriff, “Your signs are
Doing no good.. Can I put up my own sign?”
The sheriff told him, “Sure thing, put up your own sign..”
He was going to let Farmer John do just about
Anything in order to get him to stop calling everyday to complain.

The sheriff got no more calls from Farmer John.
Three weeks later, curiosity got the best of the
Sheriff and he decided to give Farmer John a call..
“How’s the problem with those drivers.
Did you put up your sign?”

“Oh, I sure did. And not one chicken has been
Killed since then. I’ve got to go. I’m very busy.”
He hung up the phone.

The sheriff was really curious now and he thought to
Himself, “I’d better go out there and take a
Look at that sign… It might be something that
WE could use to slow down drivers…”

So the sheriff drove out to Farmer John’s house,
And his jaw dropped the moment he saw the sign.
It was spray painted on a sheet of wood….

NUDIST COLONY
Go slow and watch out for chicks!

The Suspicions of Mr Whicher By Kate Summerscale

No Comments Written by whizzbang on October 27, 2009 in books.

This novel is available for £2.99 With the Times Newspaper, it concerns The real life murder of a small boy at Road Hill House which shocked Britain and was a cause célèbre even further afield. Dickens was intrigued by it, Wilkie Collins and others borrowed from it, and the public (through newspapers and broadsides) couldn’t get enough of it. The detective at its centre, Jack Whicher, was pilloried in Punch and retired a broken man, but even after the culprit was brought to justice there were twists outstanding.

On the morning of Saturday June 30 1860, 3 year old Saville Kent, was found to be missing from his bed at Road Hill House, on the edge of the village of Road, on the border between Wiltshire and Somerset. Before long his body was discovered by servants, stuffed down a makeshift toilet in the grounds of the house. His throat had been cut. The boy’s father, Samuel Kent, was not well liked. His task was enforcing the 1833 Factory Act, which made him unpopular with employers and employees both. He also erected high fences around his home and added No Trespassing signs.

What soon became clear, however, was that the killer knew the layout and sleeping arrangements in the house. There is little point erecting fences and warning notices if a murderer already lurks within….

The Duke of Gloucester recently visited the Severn Valley Railway, arriving first at a local school, before boarding the Royal Train and travelling to Highley in order to officially open The Engine House Visitors Centre, near the station. The Duke also unveiled a plaque to commemorate the occasion.

The Engine House is currently the home of such magnificent machines as the Midland Railway Compound Engine no 1000, GWR 4930 Hagley Hall, 2-10-0 Austerity locomotive no 600 Gordon, Stanier 8f no 48773 & 0-6-0 tank engine no 1501 which are all being stored out of the elements pending overhaul. I recently learnt that1501 is due to swap places with Pannier Tank 7714, which recently went out of service and is due to take it’s place at the Engine House

The Duke’s visit also included a tour of Highley Signal Box and the cutting of a ribbon to formally mark the reinstatement of Highley Footbridge after an absence of more than 35 Years. The visit was originally due to take place earlier in the year but was cancelled due to ill health.
