Lest we forget

The Soldier by Rupert Brooke

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there’s some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England. There shall be
In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;
A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,
Gave, once, her flowers to love, her ways to roam,
A body of England’s, breathing English air,
Washed by the rivers, blest by suns of home.

And think, this heart, all evil shed away,
A pulse in the eternal mind, no less
Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;
Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;
And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,
In hearts at peace, under an English heaven.

War Memorial

Dulce et Decorum est by Wilfred Owen

Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind.

Gas! Gas! Quick, boys! – An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling,
And flound’ring like a man in fire or lime . . .
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light,
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.

If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie; Dulce et Decorum est
Pro patria mori.

Guy Fawkes Night

November 5th is Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Night, when fires are lit & fireworks set off, to commemorate Guy Fawkes, who was captured in November 1605 trying to blow up the Houses of Parliament.

He was a member of the so-called Gunpowder Plot, which came about when Guy Fawkes, along with 13 other men, under the leadership of Robert Catesby, decided that they’d had enough of being persecuted for being Catholic. So they plotted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in order to kill King James I, the Prince of Wales, and other Members of Parliament, who were making life difficult for the Catholics.

Guy Fawkes

So to carry out their plan, the conspirators got hold of 36 barrels of gunpowder - and stored them in a cellar, just under the House of Lords. However it soon became clear that innocent people would also be hurt or killed in the blast, including some people who even fought for more rights for Catholics, so Some of the plotters started having second thoughts.

One of these members even sent an anonymous letter warning his friend, Lord Monteagle, to stay away from Parliament on November 5th. This letter reached the King, and the King’s forces made plans to stop the conspirators, and in the early hours of November 5th the authorities stormed the cellar beneath the House of Lords and found Guy Fawkes guarding the 36 barrels of gunpowder.

So Guy Fawkes along with a few others, was promptly arrested, the plot was foiled and he ended up being executed for treason.

Sabrina & the Engineer

The Severn Pjoect recently performed their latest performance entitled “Sabrina & The Engineer” down by the River Severn at the weekend.

It was billed as a performance of Colour, light, music & Song inspired by The River Severn & The Industrial Revolution. It started at The Town Hall, where Highley Colliery Band were playing. Then a torchlit procession (which was very atmospheric, with a hint of excitement & anticipation) proceeded through the town down to the riverside, where the main performance took place.

This centred on an engineer named Mr Ferrous, who had all sorts of grand ideas for building various machines and devices for transporting people and taking the toil out of manual labour and making life easier. Mr Ferrous needed the help of the river in order to transport the raw materials with which to make his machines, so he sets about appeasing Sabrina, goddess of the River Severn.

The performance culminated in a spectacular firework display, which vividly conjoured up images of iron-works, furnaces & The industrial Revolution in general.

Despite the ropey weather I thoroughly enjoyed the performance - The Performances were good, the costumes were great - especially Sabrina’s which was a silvery costume with various jets of water coming out like a fan. The music was great & it was very colourful.

Play in the Park

As part of Bridgnorth Music Fest, there was a free accoustic concert being performed in the bandstand in the park at Bridgnorth on Saturday entitled “Play in the Park”, so I went along to have a listen. It featured many talented artists, singing a variety of different songs, all of which were enjoyable.

First up was Aaron Alvey, singing some great folky accoustic numbers, next up were The Shifty Duo (Below), I have already seen Shifty Sarah performing down by the Quayside, so it was nice to see her performing as one of a duo. They performed a few of their excellent self-penned numbers and also did a few covers too.

Next up Linda Tilley took to the stage and performed a few folky cover-versions of various great songs. After that Rupert Dooley (below) sang some Accoustic covers of various Beatles songs plus many other great songs, which I enjoyed.

The next person to take to the stage was Juke Joint John who did some really great Rhythm & Blues numbers plus some Boogie-woogie & Ragtime, this was one of my favourite performances of the whole week. After that Malc Evans (Below) took to the stage & performed some of his excellent self penned accoustic folky numbers, this was another of my favourite performers of the week - I’d like to get his CD if possible.

The final act of the afternoon was a performance featuring the combined talents of both Rupert Dooley & Linda Tilley, which I also enjoyed, all in all it was a great afternoons entertainment.

Accoustic on the Quayside

On Bank Holiday Monday as part of Bridgnorth Music Fest there was a concert down at the Quayside , again it was all in aid of Hope House Hospice, and featured an absolutely fantastic line-up of acts.

First up were Shikidim, who got the afternoon off to a flying start with some very lively bellydancing routines, I remember seeing them last year aswell, and I enjoyed seeing them this time as much as last time. Next up were The Hair Thieves (pictured below) who did some really excellent numbers, I really enjoyed watching them too, I’d also like to get a CD if they’ve done one.

Hair Thieves

Next up was Shifty Sarah, singing some great self-penned folk tunes, plus a few cover-versions. Again she was also excellent & I enjoyed listening to her perform. The next performance was by Andrew Murphy, who did some great Accoustic numbers, plus a really great Accoustic medley of Faithless tunes, again I enjoyed this too.

Vespas

The Vespas (above) performed some fantastic lively guitar numbers next, which I enjoyed so much that I have decided I would like to get their CD aswell, I’ll also have to keep an eye out for the next performance too. Next performance was by Anna Rice who did some great self-penned folky, accoustic tunes, plus a few cover-versions aswell.

Whalebone

The next performance was by Jonmathan Day & I also enjoyed this aswell. The penultimate performance was a lively folky set by Barrel of Baddies which I also really enjoyed, I’d like to try and get a CD of these songs too. The final performance was a brilliant set by Whalebone (above) who finished the evening off in fine style with their fantastically lively folky & funky brand of music they performed old favourites like TAP & Red-Haired Boy plus a few new ones too, which were really great.

It didn’t end there either, because as soon as Whalebone had finished their set, The Love Jones started performing at a venue across the road, so I went to listen to them again.
