Walking with Dinosaurs

Having already watched and enjoyed Walking with Monsters I decided to re-watch this awesome Six part series From the same people. It is once again narrated with great enthusiasm by Kenneth Branagh, and tells the story of how the Dinosaurs came to dominate the Earth for millions of years, evolving from small creatures such as Euparkeria & Coelophysis into huge plant eating reptiles such as Diplodocus, Brachiosaurus and fearsome carnivores like Tyrannosaurus and Giganotosaurus

Episoede 1 New Blood
The first episode looks at the Lumbering herds of ancient reptiles scraping out a living in the parched deserts of the Triassic Era whilst trying to avoid becoming lunch for the Fearsome Predatory Postosuchus. And how a small & agile reptile named Coelophysis would change the face of evolution forever, for it’s ancestors would eventually come to rule the Earth for millions of years, Whilst Burrowing mammal-like reptiles like Dicynodonts stayed relatively small. It also looks at how primitive Winged Pterosaurs first took to the air to feed on insects. and how they too eventually evolved into forms that grew to great size & ruled the air for millions of years

Episode 2 Time of the Titans
The second episode, looks at the struggle which may have faced baby sauropods as they grow up during the Jurassic Era, aswell as the myriad other species of Dinosaurs sharing their world at the time, such as the egg eating Ornitholestes, armour plated Stegosaurus and the vicious Predatory Allosaurs

Episode 3 Cruel sea
Episode three looks at how, due to a rise in sea levels huge inland seas were created during the late Jurassic Era. These were Inhabited by a multitude of marine reptiles such as Long necked Plesiosaurs, Fish like Icthyosaurs and Flying reptiles like Ramphorinchus which preyed on fish. Meanwhile the land was ruled by large Predatory carnivores like Eustreptospondylus who swam from island to island continually searching for food, which with Gigantic marine reptiles like Liopleurodon swimming around was not without its risks.

Episode 4 Giant of the Skies
Episode four looks at the many species of flying Pterosaurs around during the Early Cretaceous era such as the awesome Ornithocheirus whose epic migratory flights took them across oceans, and the bizarre looking Tapejara who nested on cliffs and fed on fish. During its epic flight Ornithocheirus would have encountered large herds of Iguanadon and lumbering polacanthus along the way aswell as Carnivorous Utah Raptors

Episode 5 Spirits of the Ice forest
Back during the Mid Cretaceous Era The South Pole was covered in lush forests and episode five looks at the inhabitants of these areas, such as clans of small agile forest dwelling dinosaurs, Large Amphibious Kulasuchus and migrating herds of large Muttaburrasarus, who were all trying to avoid the attentions of Ferocious Allosaurs who roamed about preying on the unwary.

Episode 6 Death of Dynasty
The final episode is set during the late Cretaceous era when another surge in volcanic activity was gradually suffocating the world and turning it barren. It focuses on the struggle faced by a fearsome female Tyrannosaurus to raise her young in this unforgiving environment, facing hazards such as aggressive armoured Ankylosaurs or Small mammals called Didelphodon who are intent on eating the eggs she has laid, whilst giant pterosaurs called Quetzalcoatlus patrol the skies, and predatory Dromeosaurs feed on any unwary young Duck billed Anatotitans or horned Torosaurs they happened to catch roaming the barren landscape

Day of the Triffids

I’ve recently watched this Exciting star studded 2009 adaptation of John Wyndham’s classic Science fiction novel, starring Dougray Scott, Joely Richardson, Brian Cox, Eddie Izzard Vanessa Redgrave and Ewan Bremner

Originally shown last year, the story starts on a top secret facility where Scientists are breeding genetically modified plants called Triffids to extract their oil, as an alternative fuel source. Despite the initial success a scientist named Dr Mason (Scott) who has studied Triffids warns that keeping and breeding them is very dangerous, due to them being mobile, carnivorous, having a Fatal sting and an insatiable taste for human flesh, of course nobody listens.

Meanwhile the prospect of watching a spectacular solar storm has got everyone excited, unfortunately it proves to be so extremely bright it blinds nearly everyone and soon social order collapses, everybody starts panicking and chaos reigns,

Amid this chaos Mason’s fears are proved right when the Triffids manage to escape and run amok (Well, amble gradually amok) and it’s up to him to lead a ragtag group of sighted people on a desperate fight for survival and to find a way to defeat the Triffids, which is hindered somewhat by a charismatic but dodgy character named Torrence (Eddie Izzard) who tries to cause even more trouble amid the carnage.

Walking with Monsters

Ever since I was young I have been fascinated by Prehistoric animals. I think I could pronounce Pachycephalosaurus before I could even walk (Although spelling it correctly has always proved a bit of a challenge lol). Anyway I recently decided to watch this Exciting three part series narrated with great enthusiasm by Kenneth Branagh about a time before dinosaurs ruled the Earth.

Part one deals with the earliest creatures who inhabited the sea, such as Primitive crustaceans, shelled Ammonites, Belemnites, Trilobites, Sea Scorpions and the first Primitive sharks. It also looks at how over millions of years primitive fish such as Cephalaspid evolved a way to escape the predators in the water and were able to get onto dry land to eat the many invertebrates already living there, however this was not without its hazards, which included huge dragonflies like Meganeura, carnivorous spiders and gigantic centipedes

Part two looks at how Amphibians may have evolved from fish such as Mudskippers to become animals like Icthiostega & Hynerpeton , which were able to climb onto dry land and prey on the many invertebrates which lived there. It also looks at how amphibians gradually evolved to become reptiles, such as the awesome Dimetrodons & Edaphosaurs, who no longer needed to return to water so frequently and could lay their eggs on land,

Part three looks at how a change in the Earth’s atmosphere and climate plus a Massive surge in volcanic activity led to a widespread extinction. Life becomes increasingly difficult for the Herds of Scutasaurs, aswell as The awesome Half mammal Half Reptile Gorgonopsids and the Giant amphibian Labyrinthodont.

The only animals who seemed to benefit from this drastic change were small Burrowing mammal like reptiles such as Diictodon, who, once the Earth has recovered, evolved into highly successful & enormous Herds of Lystrosaurus who roamed the Earth during the Triassic period. These were preyed on by Poisonous Pherosophalians aswell as Crocodile like Chasmatosaurs.

The program also looks at the tiny Insect eating Euparkeria, who because of their unique abilities and adaptability were to eventually evolve into that most fascinating group of animals The Dinosaurs

Great British Railway Journeys 2

Recently I have been watching Great British Railway Journeys on BBC iPlayer. Narrated by Michael Portillo this Fascinating series features Michael travelling round Britain in a series of four epic train journeys with a copy of George Bradshaw’s Victorian Railway Guide book just to see how the railways have changed Britain, and what of Bradshaw’s Britain still remains. I’ve seen a few more episodes tonight

Preston to Morcambe
Michael’s second epic journey takes him north, from Preston to Scotland, on one of the first railways to cross the border. On this first leg, he explores the origins of the temperance movement in Preston, samples the attractions of Blackpool, a resort made by the railways, and takes a walk across Morecambe Bay with the official Keeper of
The sands.

Settle to Garsdale
Michael’s second epic journey takes him north, from Preston to Scotland, on one of the first railways to cross the border. On this second leg, he returns to the historic Settle-Carlisle line to find out what has happened to it since he helped save it in the 1980s. Along the way, he explores the magnificent Ribblehead viaduct, finds out about the navvies who helped to build it and catches a steam train along the line.

Windermere to Kendal
Michael’s second epic journey continues north to Scotland, on one of the first railways to cross the border. On this third leg, he takes a steamboat tour of Lake Windermere, visits Wordsworth’s home village of Grasmere and makes sausages with a local Herdwick sheep farmer.

I am currently hooked on this Fascinating series in which Michael Portillo travels the length and breadth of the country by train in a series of four epic journeys with George Bradshaw’s Victorian Railway Guide book, to see how the railways changed Britain, and what of Bradshaw’s Britain remains.

It is currently available on BBCi Player and I am also hoping it will be available on DVD with an accompanying book at some point too.

Episodes I’ve seen so far are:

Liverpool to Eccles
His first journey takes him coast to coast, from Liverpool to Scarborough, beginning on the world’s first passenger railway line. On the first leg of his journey, Michael learns to speak Scouse in Liverpool, finds out about the first railway fatality and explores the origins of the Eccles cake.

Manchester to Bury
On the second leg of his journey Michael is in Manchester to find out more about George Bradshaw himself. He also gets fitted for a trilby in Denton and learns how the railways helped to create a national institution – fish and chips.

Todmorden to York
In the third program Michael travels back in time on the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway, finds out about the latest Roman discoveries in York and takes to the air in the Network Rail helicopter

Pontefract to Briddlington
In this program Michael searches for the last liquorice grower in Pontefract, discovers how the railways turned Hull into one of the largest white fish ports in the world and goes fishing for sea bass in Bridlington.

Filey to Scarborough
In this episode Michael goes bird-watching on the wild cliffs of Flamborough Head, learns to decipher traditional knitting patterns in Filey and meets one of the oldest residents of the Victorian seaside resort of Scarborough – a 4,000-year-old skeleton called Gristhorpe Man.

The End of Time (Part 2)

No Comments Written by whizzbang on January 2, 2010 in Dr Who, Television.

The second part of David Tennant’s exciting final outing as Dr Who, sees the President of the Time Lords (Timothy Dalton), look to Earth for their salvation in order to halt the Time War, having realised Dr Who and The Doctor are still alive.

Meanwhile back on Earth The Master has put his latest evil plan in motion and The Doctor & Wilf are being held prisoner, but help comes from an unlikely source, much to the Master’s annoyance. The Doctor & The Master soon realise that somehow The Time Lords have managed to escape from the Time War and they are planning something much worse

So it’s up to The Doctor who is faced with an impossible choice whilst trying to save Earth, and after Poignant final scenes featuring appearances by all his former companions, makes the ultimate sacrifice…

But don’t worry Doctor Who will return with new Doctor Matt Smith & his (rather hot) companion Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) sometime during 2010
